The Hampton University Student Government Association (SGA) and class office elections were officially held this past Wednesday, April 9. Every candidate from each year gathered in the Student Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and held one last day of campaigning
The students running for office handed out treats like food, drinks and trinkets, and got one more chance to speak with voters personally and make their case for the election. The Student Center was open and bustling with campaigners and voters alike from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Wednesday.
“Last semester, I did not get the position, but I'm very hopeful for this election. I have genuine intentions and love for our class [Quintessence 13] and really want to do good things for us," Sophomore Class President elect Lana Asante said. “All I can do is hope other people see that at this point. I’ve campaigned hard and I hope it reaches the voters.”
Students were given QR codes to scan for their respective years and were able to vote until 5:00 that day. They gathered in the student center and cast votes as a DJ played music.
One first-year student and voter expressed her excitement for the elections and their results.
“I know who I voted for and some of my friends, but I'm waiting to see who had the majority. Some of the decisions were tough to choose between, but I think I was overall pretty satisfied with the choices and the candidates I chose,” said Tatiana Younger.
Another Hampton student gave some more insight into his thought process during the election and spoke about the importance of choosing wisely.
“It’s always interesting to see who runs and what they plan to do. A lot of people complained about the people who won last semester and say they didn’t do anything useful so the positions might look different this time around,” said first-time voter, John May. “You can never really tell if someone will do what they promise, but I’m just voting for whoever sounds the most sincere and has the most to contribute.”
